The Annual Creve Coeur Church Picnic, hosted by the Youth CommitteeWhat is Christian Science?
Christian Science was discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, a devoutly Christian New England woman, in 1866, after a severe fall on an icy street. The devotion she had to the Bible prompted her to turn to its teachings when the doctor told her there was no hope of recovery.

Through her sincere prayer to understand better the healings of Jesus, she found herself able to get up and walk out of the room – much to the astonishment of friends and family. As a result of this experience, she dedicated herself to understanding more completely the laws of God that had sustained and renewed her in her hour of need. In the textbook of Christian Science, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, she records:
In the year 1866, I discovered the Christ Science or divine laws of Life, Truth, and Love, and named my discovery Christian Science. God had been graciously preparing me during many years for the reception of this final revelation of the absolute divine Principle of scientific mental healing.
Science and Health (107:1)
Although physical healing is frequently experienced through Christian Science practice, the healing that was most significant to her was that which “would take away the sins of the world.” At age 87 she founded The Christian Science Monitor, a weekly newspaper. "The object of the Monitor is to injure no man, but to bless all mankind." She understood the healing of want, hunger, homelessness, sickness, and captivity of all sorts (Matt 25:31-46) would come through a deepening experience of God through Christ that would reveal more about the religion of Jesus. She defined God as:
The great I AM; the all-knowing, all-seeing, all-acting, all-wise, all-loving, and eternal; Principle; Mind; Soul; Spirit; Life; Truth; Love; all substance; intelligence.
Science and Health (587:5)
